DONETSK, Ukraine – Dinamo Riga has lost their final match of the 2011 Donbass Open Cup on Saturday evening, falling to Dinamo Minsk 3-2.

 

The match also coupled as Dinamo Riga’s final warm up match ahead of the season proper which begins on Wednesday with Dinamo Riga’s first game coming on the road on Friday when they when they play Salavat Yulaev Ufa on Friday.

 

Given that they had beaten Dinamo Minsk on home ice a week previous, Dinamo Riga went into the game full of confidence of repeating the feat. They were going the right way about achieving their aim early, with Mikelis Redlihs opening the scoring for the match in the 14th minute. Aleksandrs Nizivijs and Sandis Ozolins were able to provide the assistance.

 

However less than three minutes later and the teams would be back on even terms when Dinamo Minsk came up with the equalizer, seeing the teams end the opening period in a 1-1 deadlock.

 

With Martins Karsums picking up yet another preseason goal off the assist from Janis Sprukts in the 24th minute, Dinamo Riga was once more able to go in front. Ultimately however the period would belong to Dinamo Minsk who went on to pick up goals in the 36th and 38th minutes.

 

Their two late goals in the second period would prove enough to see Dinamo Minsk over the line with neither team able to produce another goal in the final period.

 

Dinamo Riga ended the tournament in third position with SKA St. Petersburg finishing first after going unbeaten through their three matches. Dinamo Minsk would finish second while hosts Donbass would fail to pick up a win, finishing in last.
