KHL teams will play their division rivals four times during the regular season. Two games will be played with teams from other divisions. The regular season includes 672 games (56 for each team) and will end on February 26, 2009. The top 16 teams will move on to the play-offs. The first two rounds will be a best of 5 series while the semi-finals and finals will be best out of 7. Playoffs will start on March 1. If all series go to their limit then the 7th game of the finals would be played on April 12. The maximum number of games a team could play during the regular season and play-offs is 81.
The schedule accommodates team play in international tournaments – on October 1, Magnitogorsk will play the NHL’s New York Rangers in the Victoria Cup, both Ufa and Magnitogorsk will compete in the European Champions League while Dinamo Moscow will play in the Spengler Cup. Requests from the Latvian and Kazakh Hockey Federations have also been factored in as well as games by national teams playing at the Eurotour (November 23-29 in Finland, December 15-21 in Russia and February 15-19 in the Czech Republic.
The regular season will stretch over 178 days and include 144 game days. There will be 21 days for national team Eurotour preparation, a 3 day All Star break, 3 days of holidays over the New Year and 7 days when games will not be played.
Fridays will see the most games played with 109 while Saturdays will see the fewest with 84.
Some teams will see longer road trips or home stands than others but the average for either will be 3 games with 6 being the maximum.
The KHL All Star Game will be held on January 11. Fans will be asked to help determine the format, whether it will be a battle between teams in the East and West or whether Russian players will face non-Russian imports. The location has not been set and the KHL will invite teams to submit bids to host the All Star Game.
